Owing to the high water at the mill, operations are suspended. In the meantime, the crew are on the drive getting logs into the water, at those parts near the rapids on the Black River, where the ice has already cleared.
The water has made its annual appearance on the "Manitoba Flats, " formerly known as "The Fly". It is only at this time of year, that the Lake, or a portion of it, visits our friends of the depot, giving them an inkling of the joys to be obtained on the mother bosom, during the whole of the summer. The vista, apart from the inconvenience of the flood, is most pleasing, and those who have time, nightly throng the trestlework on that part of the sidewalk, to view the scenery and load up with fresh air.

- Fort Needless --- Glengarry County, Lancaster twp Ref. From the Glengarry News, Alexandria, Ontario, Thursday, November 3, 1966 p. 1 col. 6 mid
Uncover Site Of Fort Needless On Riverfront At Lancaster
Fort Needless, raised at South Lancaster during the 1837-38 Rebellion and so named by the soldiers who erected it, was located yesterday on the property of Hugh Fitzpatrick, at the southeast junction of the Aux Raisin River and Lake St. Francis.
Ken MacPherson of the Historic Section of the Department of Tourism, Toronto, and an associate in that department, Hugh P. MacMillan, were in charge of the digging on a high mound of land on the Fitzpatrick property. They tunnelled into the mound and came upon the stone walls of the fort which apparently was about 10x8 feet.
A clay pipe, some nails and a few other artifacts were uncovered in the area.
The two were to complete their preliminary examination of the site today and it is possible there will be more extensive exploration next summer.
Fort Needless was so named by the British soldiers who erected it because it was obvious to them there was no need for it. As in the case of the Glengarry Cairn, erected about the same time on Squaw Island offshore, it was supposedly built to give the restless soldiers a vent for their energies through the long weeks of winter.
Mr. MacMillan had uncovered several references in his work and this led to yesterday's digging on the Fitzpatrick property. --- New 02/01

The pilot, for the moment, lost control of the vessel and she staggered with considerable force on the ledge of projecting rocks, where she stuck for an indefinete time. Distress signals were at once sent up and the barge "Glengarry", under the command of Captain Marcill?, came to the rescue. She was then lightened of a large portion of her cargo and was released from her perilous position by this powerful tug at high tide next morning. Later on she was seen kicking up considerable dust while round Point Mouille. New 1 /2003

- Indian Lands --- Glengarry County, Charlottenburgh twp & Kenyon twp. This is the section of land running from the St. Lawrence River north to the Ottawa River when originally set up, that is east of Stormont County line and west of Charlottenburgh Township line in Glengarry County. The Indians Lands consisting of some 20 some concessions belonged to the Indians of St. Regis, till about 1852, thus the the term "Indian Lands". Settlers paid rent to these Indians at St. Regis. After 1852 the government took them over and they eventually went under the department of Indian Affairs. It is basically now considered part of the townships of Charlottenburgh and Kenyon townships within the boundaries of Glengarry. Current maps do not show this but if you check the SDG Historical Atlas you will see it.

Greetings. I've always known Kentucky as the area or road that continues along the corridor going south from the end of Glen Brook rd. at the Glen rd. to Paragon rd., south of the 401 and at the big "S" curve. This is the corridor or road allowance that started at the St Lawrence river, where Marlin's orchard is now located.
Close to where Kentucky rd crosses the east/west road allowance between Summerstown station and the green part of Rae road, there used to be three farms located along that ridge. I believe the last people to live there used to be Wardens. I've recently tried relocating the old homesteads there and have only found the remains of two so far.
Hope this information helps.
Thanks for the great website.
